The Overshadowed Genius Béla Gerster

Today we’ll take a look at a forgotten genius named Béla Gerster—as presented by the brilliant researcher Oliver Szilárdi. Oliver participated in a science and technology festival, where he received an honorable mention and praise from the jury for his amazing project. Who was Béla Gerster? Béla Gerster (1850–1923) was a Hungarian architect and engineer who went down in history as the chief designer and construction manager of the Corinth Canal in Greece —an artificial canal connecting the Gulf of Corinth with the Aegean Sea and shortening the shipping route around the Peloponnese by hundreds of kilometers. The idea of cutting through the narrow Isthmus of Corinth dates back to antiquity—it was considered by the ancient Greeks and later by the Roman Emperor Nero. However, it was Gerster who, in the late 19th century, finally produced a truly feasible and technically sophisticated project. His work combined precise geodetic measurements, knowledge of the area’s geology, and the courage to undertake a construction project that had previously failed due to technical and financial obstacles. The canal was finally completed in 1893 and remains to this day one of the most remarkable engineering feats of its time—a narrow, deeply carved canal with steep rock walls, which is fascinating not only for its function but also for its visual impact.
